Unlike Kagetsu Tohya, the fandisc for Tsukihime that does a similar thing, Hollow Ataraxia is a lot more story focused comparatively. Simply, a disc that was written for the fans (hence the name). The big takeaway for this opinion though is really just the fact that it’s a fandisc. As much as I liked the Bazett side of things, a lot of really fantastic moments in HA came from the slice of life side of things. I will say, as it went on, you got rewarded with better, cooler, more touching scenes like those backstory scenes. She was a new and interesting character, and I was more interested in the plotline than most of the scenes present, at least at the beginning. It began really interestingly with the Bazett angle, but after going headlong into the scene selection stuff, I found myself almost instantly starved for the next Bazett scene. I really enjoyed Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, but I’ll admit, really early on, I honestly felt like I didn’t care about any of the silly fan service scenes. I also found myself really enjoying Avenger, Bazett, and their relationship as well. The side of the story concerning Bazett and Avenger is pretty interesting, and comes across as a pathway of plot twist after plot twist as you try to make sense of the circumstances. When it comes to the actual story scenes (which act as something akin to a reward for learning more about what’s going on through those exclamation marks) is when I’m most invested though. In Hollow Ataraxia, we get a glimpse into the upbringing of Souichirou Kuzuki, the betrayal ridden story of Medea, the tragic end of Medusa, the legend of Cu Chulainn, etc. While Fate/Stay Night gave us the backstory of all the main characters, the rest of the cast was kind of hung out to dry (because they were all enemies). Aside from the points where the actual story is furthered, these backstory sessions are some of my favorite moments in the visual novel. In the realm of characters, there are a lot of enjoyable scenes ranging from silly hijinks, cute pool dates, and backstory on some of the other characters and servants. Each of the four days have their own moments, and to see all of them, you’ll go through the four days what feels like endlessly. An “!” means it’s something that will further the story. “New” over a scene means either a slice of life type scene or something not necessarily important to the overlying plot. You can access these different scenes thanks to the addition of an over world map, with moments spread throughout, and relevant character sprites present. You mostly interact with the different characters (aside from Bazett, who only operates at night) through the eyes of Shirou once again, the main character from Fate/Stay Night. She’s told that she’s stuck in a timeloop of four days, and needs to win and obtain the holy grail within that four day time limit.Īs complicated as that may or may not sound, the actual overlying plot with Bazett takes a bit of a backseat. In the midst of this anomaly, an 8 th master, not present in Stay Night, Bazett Fraga McRemitz, awakens to an empty house in the middle of the night accompanied by an unknown servant of her own – Avenger. Taking place 6 months after the original Holy Grail War from Stay Night ended, it has mysteriously started up again, and the servants from that war are still around, though everyone is more concerned with living their new lives than fighting.

The topic of this post though, is the “sort of sequel” to Fate/Stay Night: Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, which was released in 2005, but only received a full English fan translation in 2014.

I first read it all the way through just around a year ago (because I was mostly upset I didn’t get to see the second Heaven’s Feel route movie when it aired in select theaters), and after that, started reading the aforementioned Tsukihime.

Certainly not every fan of the series has read it (as it’s an astronomically large work, and a huge time sink) but for those who have, myself included, we can attest to how fantastic it is, with a gripping narrative, great characters, etc.

It wasn’t until 2008, two years after we got that adaptation over here, that most westerners were allowed to experience the full story of Shirou, the main character, through a fan translation. All we knew about this series was what we got from the 2006 anime adaptation of (most) of the first route of that literary work. Fate/Stay Night, released in 2004, 4 years after Type-Moon’s first Visual Novel, Tsukihime, released. Fate is a series that started in a format rather foreign to most westerners.
